Most Memorable Athlete -- Webquest

Introduction

This WebQuest invites students to research the athletes at the Salt Lake 2002 Olympic Winter Games and determine which is the most memorable. They will create a digital story of the selection process.

Task

You have been hired by your local TV network to create a digital story of an athlete that is memorable to you from the games.

These questions might help your group get started:

Who set the most records?
Who won the most medals?
Who overcame many difficulties to compete at the games?
Who did better than he or she was expected to do?

The presentation could be broadcast on a news program after the Olympic games. You will need to research many athletes from many different countries and watch them compete during the Games. Listen for TV interviews. Visit the www.saltlake2002.com Website for information about the athletes. Read newspaper articles about the events, records, etc. You will select and organize information from these and other sources that will best support your selection as most memorable athlete. Finally, you will create a 1-minute digital presentation for possible use on a local news broadcast.

Process

  • Pair up with one other student to research the athletes.

  • Use www.saltlake2002.com to learn about the records, athlete information and interviews, etc.

  • Create a digital presentation (PowerPoint or iMovie) representing your most memorable athlete.

  • Email your final presentation to Dr. Nancy Wentworth (nancy_wentworth@byu.edu) for reviews from peers. She will have other schools review your work. Selected presentations will be uploaded to the Web and will be considered for presentation at the UCET technology conference March 1-2, 2002.

Evaluation

A panel of teachers and community leaders will evaluate the presentations for content information, clarity, pace, color, sound, etc. They will select presentations that are excellent and send them to a News station for evaluation. The News station will select one or more to air after the Olympics. Dr. Wentworth will upload as many as possible to the Web, and invite the creators to present their work at the UCET Technology Conference, March 1-2, 2002.

Conclusion

Answer the following questions in your journal and be prepared to discuss them in class.

What have you learned about the Olympics, about making choices and presenting your ideas to others from this activity?

What did you learn about working with students in other schools?

What have you learned about decision-making from this process?

Was this valuable to you even if your presentation was not aired on the local news program? Why or why not?
